Welcome Back to Magnetic North.

Welcome to The Magnetic North Festival 2019. This festival belongs to you. Whether you are a performing arts patron, professional, or student, we have brought together a range of work from local and national artists to entice you. We believe it takes a village to make performance, and that all of you are active participants in the creation and sharing of live experiences. The festival features shows in development where you become part of the progression of this work through your participation. There are also premieres of local productions from independent companies and artists to stimulate and provoke your senses and emotions. Important conversations need to be shared about the state of performance in Canada and the future of Magnetic North. From the bars to the talking circles, we want to hear what you have to say. The festival is back and here for YOU.

That means on June 9th we are giving you the opportunity to vote on what you want to happen next. This festival is an experiment, a work in progress, and it's up to you to shape the future and decide what is next. I want to thank everyone we have spoken with over these past two years for their honesty and their passion. You have inspired the Board of Directors to work hard to right past wrongs and to provide this forum for all of us to share work and talk to each other. I am especially indebted to Amy Lynn Strilchuk, and Ken Gass who have put their hearts and souls into this work. From the Board of Directors and our co-producers, thank you all for your words of encouragement, donations, and your presence. It mean so very much.
- Heather Redfern, Board Chair

There is so much new work being created across Canada, and rather than only program what’s ‘finished’, why not--in our national theatre festival--celebrate theatre making? So festival audiences will be let-in on the creation process – either through open-studios or sample showcase readings – whatever phase the artists are at that day.
