The Magnetic North Theatre Festival is beginning a year-long Strategic Planning initiative that will help shape the future of the Festival. As part of this planning the Festival intends to host Focus Group in various regions across the country. The purpose of these focus groups will be to receive feedback on current activities and assist the Board and Staff in planning future activities and overall direction of the Festival. Facilitated by Senior Staff members of the Festival, it is hoped that these focus groups would be attended by regional stakeholders; including artists, companies, funding agencies, media and theatre students and practitioners.
We would be delighted if you could join us in shaping the future of what has been called “The closest thing this country has to a National Theatre”.

THE WRECKING BALL PRESENTS
ELECTION ’08:
Green Plan vs Rain Man
Or: Harper Hates Minorities
Election ’08:
Green Plan vs Rain Man
Or: Harper Hates Minorities
The writ has been dropped, and, too lazy to bend down and pick it up, our Prime Minister has decided to call an election. And so the Wrecking Ball swings into action to bring you one night only (Oct 6th) of bracing political theatre from some of the county’s hottest artists. Come witness the throw-down between Harper’s haircut and Dion’s personality-like public interface. Come find out why Jack Layton’s moustache and Elizabeth May have never been seen in the same room. Come and thrill to the sounds of the third round of parliamentary musical chairs in four years. Most of all, come and find out why in this election the stakes are higher and the consequences more fraught than ever before.
Magnetic North Theatre Festival invites proposals from Ontario-based individual artists, ad-hoc collectives or unincorporated theatre companies to submit proposals to the Artistic Director. Successful applications will be awarded seed money via the Ontario Arts Council Theatre Creator's Reserve to enable them to further explore ideas which fascinate them.
I am sure that you have all heard about the recent cuts by the Conservative government to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) cultural programs and several programs at Canadian Heritage including Trade Routes and CASP, and, like myself, you are concerned not only about the immediate impact, but that this could be a precursor to more and deeper cuts.
FUNDING CUTS CLOSE DOORS ON TOURING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CANADIAN THEATRE
(Ottawa, ON – August 12, 2008) – The Magnetic North Theatre Festival promotes the diversity and quality of Canadian theatre and is the stage for marketing Canadian theatre to both national and international presenters, fostering touring opportunities to allow the work to live long after the final curtain call. The Magnetic North Theatre Festival “opens doors to the world for Canadian artists” – Ottawa Citizen. Due to recent funding cuts of Foreign Affairs and Trade Routes programs, the Magnetic North Theatre Festival will loose $36 thousand used for bringing international presenters to the festival in order to foster touring of Canadian work abroad.
