A National Arts Centre, urban ink co-production in collaboration with Playwrights Workshop Montreal and The Banff Centre for the Arts.
The World Premiere of Copper Thunderbird is a play on canvas, based on the life of Norval Morrisseau. Inside the power-lines which Norval Morrisseau boldly defined were the colours he experienced between his Objibway cosmology, his life on the street, and his spiritual and philosophical transformations to become The Father of contemporary Native art and a Grand Shaman. Featuring a cast of First Nations actors and an innovative creative team, Copper Thunderbird brings to the stage in technicolour glory the life of the extraordinary man behind the brilliant paintings.
Marie Clements, Paula Danckert and Peter Hinton have developed a theatrical language all their own with Copper Thunderbird, one in which ever more compelling imagery creates a cumulative effect as breathtaking as it is original.
MARY VINGOE
At once both wildly comic and painfully heartfelt – Copper Thunderbird concludes our season with daring, spirit and style. Not for the faint of heart, Norval Morrisseau’s story is one of victory over unbelievable hardship and transformation from pain to transcendence.
