Set amidst the doomed men and rotten ideals of Stalinist Russia, The Russian Play tells the story of Sonya, a flower-shop girl from the small town of Vladekstov, who falls in love with a charming and shadowy gravedigger from Moscow. The Russian Play is the heart-wrenching tale of a young girl grappling with the sharp edges of love and death in a time of radically shifting social and political paradigms – a bleak, bittersweet and darkly ironic ode to the dangerous joys of love.
Ottawa native Hannah Moscovitch has created a little Brechtian jewel; we are both engaged intellectually and deeply moved by the character’s plight.
MARY VINGOE
It’s that rarest of all theatrical experiments: a clever satire with a beating heart.
Kamal al-Solaylee THE GLOBE AND MAIL
…incredibly powerful with breathtaking emotion…A Must-See.
