Four shows announced!

At a Sneak Peek event held in Ottawa on November 28, 2006, Artistic Director Mary Vingoe announced four performances from the upcoming Festival in Ottawa June 6-16.  Here is a fantastic peek at a very exciting season.

Famous Puppet Death Scenes

By The Old Trout Puppet Workshop
Calgary, Alberta

The Old Trouts promise to cure your fear of death; no more anxiety about difficult choices, no more dreading birthdays, no more desperate pleas for immortality through fame, art, or progeny. Through a collection of famous scenes culled from the absolute best puppet shows in history, the Old Trouts will deconstruct your traumatized psyche and reconstruct you so that death means nothing to you anymore. In a way, we promise ever-lasting life – through a puppet show.

Sexual Practices of the Japanese

By Theatre Replacement
Vancouver, British Columbia
Written by Maiko Bae Yamamoto, James Long, Manami Hara and Hiro Kanagawa
Directed by Maiko Bae Yamamoto and James Long

In a scintillating peek at the world of sexual stereotypes surrounding Japanese culture, Theatre Replacement’s trilogy of interweaving one-acts moves from a crowded commuter train to one of Tokyo's infamous love hotels.  This wittily irreverent show touches on office politics, work parties and Seattle Mariners’ star out-fielder (and Japanese icon) Ichiro Suzuki.

The Russian Play

By Company Theatre Crisis and Absit Omen Theatre
Toronto, Ontario\
Written by Hannah Moscovitch
Directed by Natasha Mytnowych

The Russian Play is the bleak, bittersweet and heart-wrenching story of a young girl in Stalinist Russian grappling with the sharp edges of love and death in a time of radically shifting social and political paradigms. The play opens as Sonya, a flower-shop girl from the small Russian town of Vladekstov, lies dying in a Moscow jail cell. Through a series of highly theatrical flashbacks, Sonya reveals how her love for Piotr, a charming and shadowy gravedigger, has led to her ruination and death. While Sonya cautions her audience against love’s many dangers, Sonya’s bitter outlook on love is offset by her obvious delight in Piotr's embraces.

God’s Middle Name

By In Good Company
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Written by Jennifer Overton
Directed by Scott Burke

An evocative parable of crashing into the unknown and accepting the unknowable, God’s Middle Name is a compelling tale of one mother’s journey through the uncharted territory of raising an autistic child.  An episodic journey over the course of 10 years dealing with confusion, prior to a life-altering diagnosis, through stages of denial, anger, depression, bargaining and finally acceptance.  Based on the book Snapshots of Autism by Jennifer Overton, this true story is incredibly moving as it’s performed by the story teller herself.
